"When parents enter the NICU for the first time, the nervous system, through a process called neuroception, decides whether this is a safe environment. If the threshold for safety hasn't been met it will either collapse into Dorsal Vagal response, for freeze/collapse, or it mobilises the sympathetic nervous system into fight or flight, where the vagal break is released, heart and breath rate increases, pupils are dilated ready to be alert, and muscles are mobilised.
